VINTAGE SHOPPING

Confession time, I shop every single day if not three or four times a day. I will either be on Instagram and find a new brand, then window shop their new in’s and best sellers. Or I set aside time to shop for key items for the season for my blog. And not to mention shopping for work purposes, with key inspiration and ideas for new designs. It’s something that after 8 years of working within the fashion industry has become ingrained in me. Some designers after going on so many shopping trips start to actually hate shopping and see it as a chore. Oh no, not me! I am very much still in love with shopping and clothes in general.

As much as I love to buy a brand new top from a high street store, I am very much aware of the effect the fashion industry has had on the planet. As someone who is part of the whole process from the idea to the finished product, which is hanging in my wardrobe I have a feeling of responsibility to the problem.

After many factory visits and seeing behind the scenes of what goes into making a garment, my first thoughts were always to the workers and asking about the working conditions and chatting with them. The process was always an afterthought until I watched the Stacey Dooley program where she fully investigated the industry. This really hit home and actually made me stop buying so many pairs of NEW jeans. I wrote a blog post about how the program left me feeling, how I would stop being new jeans and start looking towards vintage and pre-loved pairs instead. And in fact over the last 6 months, I have only bought one pair of brand new jeans instead of opting for pre-loved jeans. This is all thanks to COW Manchester and the other great vintage stores we have up here in Manchester.

Over these last few months, I have really got into being more thrifty, checking charity stores as well as the vintage ones and finding some real gems. So much so I am starting to sell the hidden gems I find as there were so many great pieces out there that need a new home. I’ve always wanted to start my own brand but if I was ever to do so it would have to all be recycled or sustainably sourced fabrics and on top of that made in ethical factories. Right now I don’t have the pennies to do all that so the next best thing is setting up a shop of vintage and pre-loved pieces I find and selling them on eBay. I already sell any unwanted items from my wardrobe on eBay. Nothing gets thrown in the bin, anything I can’t sell I recycle with either H&M, & Other Stories or goes to a clothes bank.

All the vintage pieces have been hand picked by me and have been either dry cleaned or washed by me and are ready to wear. Included is this 1980’s Burberry’s blazer and these black LEE jeans. Like I said earlier, I’ve really taken to buying second-hand jeans and even if the fit of them is slightly too big then getting them taken in at the alterations shop to fit me. As for this blazer, I love the oversized look, the shoulder pads are strong, making me think of the suits the guys wore in Wolf of Wall Street. As always I like to mix old pieces with something new and this top from Marks & Spencer creates a chic look. The cowboy boots and animal print faux fur bag just add a little bit of edge and give a nineties feel to this outfit.

Do let me know if you have been vintage shopping recently and what gems you have found? And please do check out my other items to see if like what I’ve found!
