As you might have gathered I kinda like denim. I feature so much of it on here but jeans are the one item I always turn to and pair with any new purchase I make. More importantly jeans are what I reach for when I'm having a 'don't know what to wear' day and all you want is your favourite pair, with a white t-shirt and some classic boots - outfit done. I honestly don't know what I would wear if jeans didn't exist!
Even though jeans have always been a big part of my wardrobe, it's not always been the most flattering piece I've bought. I've had my fair few disastrous purchases from a very tight fitting white pair and remember those low slung jeans I mentioned in another post, yes I tried them with a crop top.. I will not be going back there again. From all the mistakes I've made I've definitely learnt along the way and hopefully my advice below will help you to find your perfect pair of jeans.
Know your body shape
This first one is a biggie and should not be ignored if you really want jeans to be a staple in your wardrobe. Find out if you are an apple, pear or hourglass that way you know what type of leg you need for your shape. For example I am in between a pear and an hour glass, meaning I look and feel better more importantly in mom jeans. Tight fitting round my ass and a straight leg. If your hips are wider than your shoulders or an apple shape you need to balance this out by wearing a lose leg. If you are rectangle or hourglass you can pretty much wear any style to your taste - you lucky things!
Another big one to forget. Of course you have to start at what size you are in a trouser, but that doesn't mean you will be the same in jeans in that store. It all varies from store to store. But more importantly it doesn't matter what size you buy, it's what size that fits and makes you feel comfortable in! It doesn't bother me if I go up one or even two sizes, if it looks good on, perfect!
Altering the jeans to fit your shape
Women are not one style fits all. We come in all different sizes and your clothes are an extension of this. So once you have found the perfect style of jean and you try them on to find that it's a little lose at the waist or it would look better taken up. Then get them altered! Once I find a pair I love it's sometimes the length that lets them down, so when I'm back at home I cut the length to suit my height. Never be afraid to alter new or old items, as you will love them even more once you've done it.
Chose the right shade
Like I said before about those tight white jeans being a big mistake, it came down to the colour being so optic white making my bum and legs look bigger than they were. You really have to experiment here to find which shades work for you. I currently own a very light stone wash pair, which I love and they go with tonnes of things. But the standard shades that work for everyone are black, navy or dark blue and the popular blue that you see on a pair of vintage Levi's. The darker the shade the more flattering the colour on your figure, plus you don't have to wash them as much as light coloured pairs.
The last piece advice is to just play around with styling. Experiment with opposites within your outfits. Take a polished dark denim jean and team it with a pair of old Converse and a distressed t-shirt. Or wear a distressed pair of jeans and tuck an oversized white shirt into them. To finish the look off try an oversized check blazer. Jeans are for the everyday but that doesn't mean your outfit should be an average look. Your jeans should be working for you and making you feel amazing in that perfect pair!
