Well hello from Los Angeles! I'm sat here writing this post enjoying the last of the Californian sunshine. The trip was very unexpected and a proper pinch myself moment for my blog! I have been very lucky enough to have won a competition with H&M to come away to LA and watch the H&MxERDEM catwalk show. Joe took a photo of me wearing a H&M floral maxi dress I wore for London Fashion Week and I posted it my Instagram with the hashtag #hmxerdem. The whole experience so far has been surreal, I still can't believe I won this crazy competition, and that I'm actually here!

But before we get into the show and what Ibought from the pop-up shop, I wanted to bring to you this dress. This look here was perfect for wandering around the city exploring and shopping. On this particular day, we spent the day shopping in and around The Grove. The weather has been unseasonal and really hot for this time of year, so I took the chance to wear a mini dress and enjoy the sunshine. I picked this floral piece up from Topshop back in London with this trip in mind but also thinking ahead to our weather back home. As always I like to make the most of every piece of clothing I buy, my intention is to wear it over jeans. The dark floral print is a great wintery update to my stripy wrap dress I particularly lived in this summer. I also bought that dress away with me for this trip. Check out my Insta for a photo of me in the striped dress along Venice Beach.

I was also lucky enough to have a plus one, so of course my Instagram husband had to come along. Being massive foodies we had lots of places saved and marked for us to try. I will be putting together a full list of the best places to eat, drink and stay in a blog post. But for now here's the first look from my LA trip.

Carrying on from last weeks post about taking my style back to what I know, I updated my long sleeve tops with this square neck version from Topshop Boutique. These kinds of ribbed tops become a great in-between piece for autumn. I fell in love with this one thanks to the split cuff detail, although it's not ideal when you are super hungry and dip the sleeves in your food. Note to self, always roll them up!

As well as the sleeve detail I am loving the cream base, the perfect unstated colour that you can wear with anything. This outfit here features three pieces that are building blocks for any outfits. Together they make up a simple outfit but each piece can be worn with anything within my wardrobe. I feel like I have my style back on track. For a while I felt I had lost my way with shopping, I had been drawn towards trend-driven pieces and not thought about how to wear them the second, third or fourth time around. For example my bold red boots and cardigan are lovely but I have to be careful how many times I wear them as they are so prominent in a look.

This season sees so much emphasis on bold colours, the eighties inspired looks and luxe outfits. I love seeing how the high street reacts to the catwalk trends. Some like Zara go crazy and follow trends exactly, while others simply give a nod with subtle details and fabrics. The last month or so I have fallen into the trap of following the trends exact, acting like a magpie. The only thing with this is, it's never long lasting. Trends are always short lived and I get bored very easily of IT pieces and colours. So I find myself going back to the subtle details, basic colour palette and giving a nod to trends. This way anything I buy will be worn time and time again, without getting bored of my purchases.

How do you feel about trend pieces? Are you still loving what you have purchased so far or like me are you now bored?

Over the last couple of months, I have flirted with the idea of past eras of fashion, taking on elements and mixing them up with my current wardrobe. Over the last couple of outfit posts though I've let the trends get the better of me and not carefully thought out my looks.

From looking over some of my most recent Instagram posts I feel I went too far with colour. Colour does excite me and there is tones of it across the high street, which got me hook line and sinker. Looking back over what I have bought so far I felt really annoyed at myself for letting the trends take over my style. This is the style rut running riot! I talked more about this in another post here.

Taking a step back I sorted through my wardrobe and made a conscious decision to stick to fabrics and colours I know that I will wear for years and not months. Following a shopping trip over the weekend, I came back with more considerate items that are more fitting with my style. Sometimes you have to take a step back and review where you want to take your ideas and make a decision not to buy into just any old trend that comes in.

One of the first pieces that I picked up was this polka dot blouse. This is a proper bargain at £12.99! The fabric makes the blouse light and gives a nice billowing touch to the sleeves. This whole look works perfectly as both top and jeans cinch me in at the waist and a little bit of height with these boots. This look is a great transitional outfit for the in between seasons.

I would love to know how you guys are coping with this transitional period and the first look of the new trends?

A STYLE RUT

We have all been there at some point in the year, the dreaded style rut! For me it happens just before we are heading into the next season. I don't know what to wear, I've had enough of my current season cothes and there is just nothing in the shops that inspires me. This time it hit me about a week ago and it hit me hard, so much so I'm still yet to find my groove with the trends and more importantly fit the new season trends into my style.

Like anyone who goes through this, you just have to figure it out as you go. I am always wanting to add new pieces to my current wardrobe but with any new season brings new trends and thats where I need to figure out which ones I want to invest in and update my style. It's no surprise that new trends can feel overwhelming, for example this season saw designers really experiment with luxe fabrics, glitter, metallics and head to toe one colour outfits. So if like me you are feeling like you need to ease yourself into these trends here's my advice:

blue satin top, black whitles jeans, velvet heels, velvet handbag, grey hair 2

Try a new colour.
For the average woman, we are not going to rock a full head to toe red or purple look to work, it's just not workable for us. But this doesn't mean you can't take elements of red and wear a red top with black trousers or a pair of pink heels with your suit to work. Like here I took inspiration from the Louis Vuitton catwalk show with this electric blue satin top. Instead of a full blue look, I've paired this top with some black jeans to offset this whole look. If colour isn't your thing, another big trend for this season is checks and suiting. Just by adding a check blazer over the top of a dress or jeans and t-shirt you have updated an old look.

Mix up your style.
From time to time a style rut can extend to hair and make-up, so the best way to combat this is to get booked in to see a hair stylist. Get a consultation and they will advise you new colours and hairstyles which will work for you. I recently had my hair done and my hairdresser Ky knows me well enough to know that I love to experiment with my hair. So this time he has taken me grey! He has still bleached my hair and the grey will fade over the next couple of weeks, but for now I am fully grey and I love it! Sometimes all you need is a new haircut and colour to feel brand new again.

Back to basics.
If both of these two tips fail and you really are in a proper rut with your style, my advice is to go back to the basics. Take any trend-driven pieces out of your wardrobe and strip your look back to basic items such as white shirts, classic jeans, t-shirts, ankle boots etc. By taking your wardrobe back to these basics items you can start to re-build your style from the bottom up.

Please let me know if you have experienced a style rut and leave any advice below how to conquer it.
